I recently read a great article on how to align your spending with your values. It is a great starting point for being more intentional with what you want to spend your money on. I try to keep a shopping list on my phone for things like home items and clothes so that when I do get a chance to browse a store (which isn't very often!) I have a form of accountability.
After reading the article, I put together my own lists of what not to buy, what I do want to invest in, and the places I want to shop from.
Do not buy
- Fashion trends that aren’t part of my timeless style/pass the test of time/flattering to my body type
- Seasonal mugs (besides maybe one perfect Valentine heart mug I’ve been hunting for)
- Toys that aren’t part of our already established collections
- Seasonal decor - use what you have, stay within allotted storage bin size!
What I do want to invest in:
- Books for my kids - books with stories of substance and beautiful illustrations. I especially love anything old or vintage and of simpler times.
- Our home - simplifying, making more space with what we have, encouraging time together, encouraging time outside
- Good quality food - easy but delicious meals for my family, making memories around meals and celebrations
- Time away with Brent - overnights and enjoyable meals
- Clothes that are stylish, timeless, comfortable, and that I can mom in - nothing too fussy
Where you want to invest:
- Delivery and convenience are key for me in this season of mothering so I am relying on online shopping, delivery, or drive up. The goal is to consume less/consume only what we need.
- Second hand - thrift stores, eBay, Poshmark (can I wait to buy this item and try to find it at the thrift store first?)
- Semi DIY - finding supplies and crafty starting points from Etsy
Make a plan:
- Intentional gifting: bath bombs/steamers or coffee gift cards for friends and teachers (consumable self care for the ladies) - have these on hand so I don't have to go to the store, sticker by letter/number for kid birthdays (give an activity and not add to the stuff)
- Use wish lists for me and kids and wait to buy
- Shop with a list - thrifting, TJ-Maxx, Homegoods, clothes for kids for outlet shopping, my own clothes shopping list
- Unsubscribe from marketing emails
